INSIDE BOTTEGA VENETA’S SLEEK NEW BOSTON BOUTIQUE

Boston
Made by:
Tomas Maier

Creative director Tomas Maier is often credited with taking the luxury leather company Bottega Veneta back to the basics. He refined the brand’s aesthetic, removed flashy labels, and brought an emphasis back to quality and craftsmanship.

Maier has shown the same practiced precision in his store design, most recently with a new shop in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The 2,500-square-foot boutique is located in the Heritage on the Garden, a historic building that spans one city block and houses other luxury brands like Christofle and Hermès. Here Maier stayed true to Bottega’s signature details: Door handles are covered in leather, walls are sheathed in Ultrasuede, and furniture is upholstered in luxe mohair. In a sleek, minimalist style, walnut cabinets display small leather goods, while industrial-style steel shelving exhibits the brand’s hallmark intrecciato leather bags.

LIU JO STORE BY FABIO CASELLI DESIGN, SINGAPORE

Singapore
Made by:
Studio Fabio Caselli Design

LIU JO’s new retail point was opened in Singapore’s prestigious WISMA ATRIA Mall. The store’s realization by Studio Fabio Caselli Design follows the Gold Concept’s guiding principles of a harmonious combination of materials and space in order to represent its central concepts: Luxury and Made in Italy. Brightness, transparency, and precious materials are combined to create a space that is extremely feminine and enveloping.

In particular, for what concerns the materials utilized for the interiors, Fabio Caselli’s Design Studio places great importance on the choice of metals. A combination of gold and steel is employed for the wall decorations, columns and counters. The same chromatic choices has been made for the niche Gold Capsule Colletion: crystal shelves and hangables favour the outfitting of the various product types.

The wood used for the drawers and register area is treated with a specific finish “millerighe” (multi striped). The store’s focal point is a semi-transparent screen, made of alternating cream and gold strips on steel structure, which divides and defines the surrounding space. Finally, the walls are entirely lined with paper creating a special “tiny square” effect. The structured surfaces lend themselves well to the use of interesting three-dimensional effects created by the lights.

As mentioned above, light is the fundamental element which binds and enhances all other elements employed in the Gold Concept, and on which great attention is placed in order to create situations and atmospheres that will draw the customers’ attention and spark their curiosity.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN UNVEILS FIRST JAPANESE FLAGSHIP

Tokyo
Made by:

The store, which was opened Sunday, joins labels including Givenchy, Prada and Marc Jacobs in the Tokyo neighborhood, and sits next to Balenciaga. “The environment seems a good fit for McQueen — it’s quite an open, contemporary environment, which we like,” said Jonathan Akeroyd, chief executive officer at Alexander McQueen. “Of all the areas in Tokyo, I think that was the natural fit for our brand. We’ve taken our time to make sure we get the right space.”

The two-story store carries Alexander McQueen’s men’s and women’s wear collections, including runway looks, ready-to-wear designs and accessories, and will also showcase the house’s classic pieces, such as its skull scarves and knuckle-box clutches. The Aoyama store adds to an Alexander McQueen accessories unit, which opened last year in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills neighborhood. Prior to opening the Aoyama store, the label’s presence in Japan was primarily through its shops-in-shop in department stores, which the company operates. Akeroyd noted that while Japan is an “important” part of the firm’s business, it’s a smaller market for the label than the U.S. or China.

“I think that’s because [Japan] is very much a retail model,” Akeroyd said, “So I think this [store] really will be the start for us being able to build on that.” While Akeroyd declined to provide sales projections for the new store, he said he expects it to be “an important store within our portfolio.”

The new store showcases the retail concept conceived by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, in partnership with David Collins Studio. Designed in a palette of gray, lilac, white and soft gold, the store features a cracked white Calacatta Oro marble floor, with pale gray leather furnishings clad in marble, along with black lacquer rails.

The boutique’s design spotlights a number of details that are unique to the space. They include walls covered in plaster paneling, with one panel that features a molded motif of wings, shells, cactus flowers, sea horse tails, skulls, gargoyles and leaves. Akeroyd noted that the process of modeling the panel specifically for the store took about two months. “It’s something that has a lot of consideration,” he said. “It’s important from Sarah’s point of view that we adapt and change [the store concept] so that it doesn’t feel like you’ve been there before. For customers that travel, it’s important to see a bit of personality there.”

Other details include a staircase crafted from a single piece of white marble, along with an artwork that the house commissioned from contemporary artists Takeo Hanazawa and Takao Togashi. The piece is a chandelierlike structure suspended from the store’s ceiling, which hangs down the center of the staircase. The piece is inspired by a Japanese ink paint called the “Hyonenzu,” and features hanging sculptures of gourd vessels, catfish, skulls and shell fragments.

In terms of further retail openings, Akeroyd said Alexander McQueen will open its third store in China, in Chengdu, this summer, with openings in Monaco, Vienna and Harbour City in Hong Kong — the label’s third store in the region — set for later this year.

About De Beers

"There are no measurements to describe how to find your perfect diamond. However important the 4 C`s are - beauty is the only arbiter. All diamonds should show Fire, Life, and Brilliance. Fire is the beautiful rainbow effect that is produced by the dispersion of light, Life is the scintillation and sparkle when you move the stone in front of your eyes, and Brilliance is the brightness of the diamond due to reflected white light when the diamond is still. Ultimately though, it is the diamond that chooses you."
Andrew Coxon, President of the De Beers Institute of Diamonds

De Beers Diamond Jewellers is the quintessential diamond jeweller, giving substance to style, bringing together the diamond’s dualities of science and poetry, melding its rich history and long traditions with contemporary creativity and cutting-edge craftsmanship. The diamond is a sparkling, celebratory symbol of continuity and eternity, of reassurance and hope for the future, and De Beers brings this beautiful symmetry into the light with its classically elegant jewellery.

For a century and more, De Beers diamonds had been set, anonymously, into the creations of master jewellers around the world; now the finest natural diamonds, both rough and polished, have a home of their own. Fusing the essential timelessness of the diamond with dynamic, contemporary yet classic designs, we are the leaders in diamond jewellery innovation in both artistry and craftsmanship. De Beers Diamond Jewellers was established in 2001 as an independently managed and operated company by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury goods company, and De Beers SA, the world’s premier diamond mining and marketing company.
